Custom 3D printing — capabilities, materials, and fulfillment

Below is how we describe our work in three areas: capabilities (what we print and the options we can add), materials (what we run on the machines), and fulfillment (pickup and shipping). For a shorter overview and photos of the quote flow, see the home page.

Core FDM printing

This is the base capability: fused deposition modeling (FDM) from your geometry. We accept common CAD exchange formats—typically STL, STEP, and 3MF. Very large STEP assemblies may need a manual review; if something looks too heavy for the uploader, email us and we will work it out—same idea as our FAQ.

How big can one print be?

Single-piece FDM jobs can run up to roughly 390 × 390 × 340 mm. We pick settings and orientation for the material and shape—not every file uses that full box, but that is the practical ceiling for one shot off the bed. Larger work usually means a clean split and assembly plan; we line that up with you before we print.

We also take on prototypes, short runs, and big models that need a split-and-assembly plan—before we print, we think through how the pieces should go together.

Multicolor

Another capability on top of single-color FDM: jobs that use more than one color in the same order. Extra colors are priced as an add-on in the quote flow so expectations stay clear up front. On complex geometry, we may confirm how colors split across parts or regions so the result matches what you had in mind.

Custom work and extras

Beyond straight-from-file printing, these options extend what we can do on a job-by-job basis.

  • Have a file: options like lettering, light model edits, or rush can be called out on the quote when they apply.
  • No file or full custom: start with Contact—same story as our upload page callout for designed-for-you work.
  • Post-processing: inserts, tapping, assembly help, and finishing are quoted case by case when you need more than raw FDM.

Materials

Material choice is the second pillar on this page. We routinely print PLA, PETG, ABS, nylon, and other engineering options when the job calls for strength, heat, or chemicals. We keep common colors and grades on hand, especially PLA, and we are happy to order the right spool for your project.

If you need very soft TPU or TPE, we will try it—but we stay upfront when the finish might be less predictable so you can decide with full context.

Pricing snapshot

Estimates tie together everything above: material, geometry, size and splits, edits, lettering, rush, multicolor add-ons, and post-processing when it applies. You get an online starting point, then we confirm the final number before print time—no surprise figure at the end.

Fulfillment

The third pillar is how you receive the part. Pickup is available in Ankeny, generally Monday–Friday, 8am–3pm; exact address and scheduling details go out after you order. Shipping is available when mailing the part is the better fit.

From idea to part

In practice: you upload a model (or reach out without one—see custom work above), we build an estimate, and we confirm the real quote before anything prints. For step-by-step photos of that flow, see how it works on the home page.

Who is this for?

The same audiences we call out on the home page—grouped here after the service detail for one-stop reading.

Students and teachers

Science fair parts, simple mechanisms, adapters for lab setups, or classroom demos. We keep jargon light and focus on a part that fits the assignment and the timeline.

Engineering and prototyping

Test fits, brackets, enclosures, and one-off fixtures before you commit to tooling. We flag split plans and material tradeoffs so you are not surprised at assembly time.

Home and repairs

Replacement knobs, clips, covers, and household fixes that are hard to buy off the shelf. If you can describe the problem or send a photo, we can suggest a print path.

Gifts and creative projects

Personalized lettering, props, and small runs for friends and family. Multicolor and finishing options are on the table when they match your design.

Local or shipped

We are based in Ankeny for pickup, and we ship when that is easier than a drive. Either way, we package prints so they arrive as cleanly as we would want ourselves.
